Spring Planting

I packed sub sandwiches, pringles, fresh baked cookies and fruit cups for lunches and Michael and I headed out the door at 6:20 yesterday. I worked........ and bribed him into getting ready by offering a Bur.ger King breakfast. It worked. He was up and ready to go =). I'm sure my handsome farmer husband was up right after we left. I hung his lunch on the back door knob so he wouldn't forget it and placed a fresh cooler of ice water on the floor right next to it.

One of Micheal's Reg.ion V friends was at the clinic getting therapy and was done at 3pm, when I was getting ready to leave, so I gave him a ride back to Reg.ion V. He saw our radio in the suburban. To show him how it worked, I gave hubby a call. "How is it going?"........."Not very good...can you bring me a change of clothes...I'm covered with hydraulic oil..." was the reply. This was the third motor that has blown out on the fertilizer pump since he started planting this spring. ....praying for patience....

I ran Michael home and got an ice cream bucket of warm water, a bar of soap, wash cloth and towel and a change of clothes and headed over to the field (with my camera this time). He washed up at the back of the suburban. I held up a blanket and made a quick changing room between the cargo doors. He was in a better mood now... Thankfully, he could keep planting and had to just quit adding the fertilizer to the planted seed on the rest of those acres.

He hopes to finish planting that field today. There is a 50-60% chance of rain by this afternoon and the goal for the day is to be done over there. After I take Michael to work (KZ today) I will come back and pack us our lunches and head over and pick up sticks along the north and south fencelines on the west side of this field. Remember doing that, kids????

I remember the year we were walking beans in this field, and the button weeds were so thick along the creek/ditch that you about needed a machete to chop them out...remember that, kids?? It was so hot that day. I think we went over to Ceresco to the Dairy Que.en for lunch..or maybe Elsie's Cafe in Ithaca, and came back and finished. Andy...the slave driver...always wanted to finish the further away fields on the same day so we wouldn't have to come back the next day. That creek/ ditch is gone now and so are those piles of trees in the middle of the field on the west side. .............................but there are still roots and branches to pick up along the fencelines and no more kids home to help!! =) I need the exercise anyway, and will watch that tractor go back and forth while I work....and think of those days we all worked together down the hill..........remembering Dad's field songs...."your so bain...you probably think this dog is about you...".... ..(there is this weed called 'dogbain'.....well, I guess you would just have to have been there....hehehe....

Hmmmm, let's see...do I remember all those button weeds??

Well, not sure, as I was probably sitting down in the row picking bean leaves.

Whew -- I'm just tired reading about "The Day In the Life of a Farmer." Yet, you encourage me immensly as I see your faithfulness and diligence in your "small corner." We'll be praying for a good harvest this year and no more "flashing field farmers" in need of another change of clothes.

I got a kick out of Steve's dogbain song - I can just hear him sing it. :-) Ah.....memories of walking beans.....too bad that's becoming a thing of the past.

Ahh, no, ...not really.....
I'd rather just remember those days than to have that to look forward to on the 5th of July....
thank you....

Andy tells me all the time how he wishes he could go back to the bean-walking days... NOT!! My brothers and I endured the bean-walking too. ...it was one of those things that 'built character' as my folks put it. :)
